jingoism. The word comes from a music-hall song popular at the time of the 1876–8 Eastern crisis: ‘We don't want to fight, but by jingo if we do …’. Later it was used to describe other manifestations of popular bellicosity during foreign wars. The most famous example was on
Mafeking night, 18 May 1900, when crowds took to the streets to celebrate the relief of a British garrison during the second
Boer War, although there is controversy over how widespread the feeling was. It also erupted later, notably during the
Falklands War of 1982, stoked up—as it generally is—by the gutter press.
