Yevele, Henry (d. 1400). Architect. Yevele, probably from Derbyshire, began as a stonemason, moved to London, and became a freeman in 1353. In 1360 he was appointed by Edward III master mason in charge of the palace of Westminster and the Tower of London. At the palace he was responsible for the Clock and Jewel Towers. He was reappointed by Richard II in 1378 and his responsibilities widened to include general supervision of the king's works. In the 1390s he supervised the rebuilding of Westminster Hall. Yevele may have also constructed the tomb of Edward III and in 1395 was commissioned to erect a tomb for Richard II and his late wife Anne of Austria. He finished as a man of substantial property with several estates.
