White, Gilbert (1720–93). Naturalist. Born in his grandfather's vicarage in the village of Selborne (Hants), into a scientifically minded family, White was educated at Oriel College, Oxford (fellow, 1744), and ordained in 1747, but preferred a Hampshire curacy to a ‘fat goose living’ elsewhere to stay close to the family home The Wakes (inherited eventually, with tortoise). A scientific naturalist by intention and committed diarist and record-keeper, observant, accurate, and unassuming, he started a ‘Garden Kalendar’ in 1751 which developed into ‘The Naturalist's Journal’ (1768); this, with letters and papers, provided source material for
The Natural History of Selborne (1788), subsequently an English classic, reflecting concern for the behaviour of living things rather than dead specimens, and evoking village life. Gardening was one of White's greatest pleasures, but he regularly visited London, Oxford, and relations, was essayist and poet, corresponded with other naturalists, and influenced local husbandry.
