Vinegar Hill, battle of, 1798. Part of the Wexford rebels in the Irish rising made camp on Vinegar Hill, just outside Enniscorthy, where they terrorized the protestants of the neighbourhood. On 21 June 1798, having recovered from their initial surprise, government forces under General Lake stormed the hill. Pikes and numbers were no match for artillery, and the rebels dispersed and were forced back to Wexford with heavy losses.
