Vespasian. Roman emperor ad 69–79. Titus Flavius Vespasianus was born in ad 9 at Reate in Sabine country. In 43 as legate of legio II Augusta he took part in the invasion of Britain, distinguishing himself at the Medway battle and going on to reduce the south-west, defeating two powerful tribes and reducing twenty hill-forts. For these services he was awarded the ornamenta triumphalia. Late in 66 he was appointed to command the suppression of the Jewish revolt and was proclaimed emperor in 69 following Nero's suicide. Vespasian was the ultimate victor of the ‘Year of the Four Emperors’, founding the Flavian dynasty. His financial prudence corrected the profligacies of Nero and allowed him to build the Temple of Peace and the Colosseum in Rome. In Britain the advance north was resumed under his kinsman by marriage, Petillius Cerialis.
