Smith, Ian Douglas (1919–2007). Rhodesian politician, advocate of white rule. In 1961 Smith founded the Rhodesian Front, a party which rejected the proposal of the government of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland to offer more representation for blacks in Parliament. When the federation was dissolved (1963), Smith became prime minister of Southern Rhodesia in 1964. He rejected Britain's plan for black majority rule in the colony and in 1965 unilaterally declared Rhodesia's independence. He then fought a powerful rearguard action against British attempts to reverse the declaration. In response to the imposition of economic sanctions by the UN he severed Rhodesia's links with the Commonwealth and in 1970 declared the country to be a republic. The civil war subsequently waged by black nationalists against his government forced Smith to take part in negotiations in London, as a result of which black majority rule was introduced in 1979.
