Romney, George (1734–1802). Painter, mainly of portraits. He was born in Lancashire and worked in the north of England until 1762, when he left his wife and children to go to London, where he attracted a fashionable clientele. Between 1773 and 1775 he was in Italy, which inspired him to plan a number of literary and historical works that rarely went beyond the sketching stage. About 1781 he became infatuated with Emma Hamilton and is probably best known for his many portraits of her. A fast and prolific painter who, according to John Wesley, ‘struck off an exact likeness at once, and did more in an hour than Sir Joshua [Reynolds] did in ten’, Romney rarely exhibited and never at the Royal Academy. In his later years he became insane, returning home to die.
