Ricardo, David (1772–1823). Born in London of Dutch parents, Ricardo's career 1793–1814 was as a stockjobber, initially in the family firm. Accruing a reasonable fortune, he bought the country estate of Gatcombe Park in 1814; by 1819 he was elected member of Parliament. Much of his time was devoted to the study of mathematics, sciences, and political economy; this led to
On Principles of Political Economy and Taxation (1817), where the influence of Adam
Smith's Wealth of Nations is to be seen. His work was highly significant, with great originality in theoretical economics across a broad subject area, covering the theory of value and distribution and particularly the law of rent. He is credited also with the theory of comparative advantage which proposed international specialization in traded products and was the foundation of the
free trade argument.
