Northumberland, Henry, earl of (
c.1115–52). The only son and heir to David I of Scotland and grandson of
Waltheof, earl of Northumberland (d. 1076). His father intervened against King Stephen but reached an understanding in 1136, resigning the earldom of Huntingdon to his son, who did homage to Stephen. The following year another settlement gave him the earldom of Northumberland, excluding Newcastle and Bamburgh. There is testimony to his bravery and piety. His sons Malcolm IV and William the Lion succeeded on the Scottish throne.
