Long Melford church

Long Melford church (Suffolk), dedicated in honour of the Holy Trinity, was completely rebuilt in the second half of the 15th cent. Surviving inscriptions, glass, and wall-painting testify to the prominence of the Clopton and Martin families, among others, in this rebuilding. Very unusually, some idea of what the interior of the late medieval building looked like can be got from a description by Roger Martin, who was a recusant in the reign of Elizabeth I, and who wrote down all he could remember of the furnishings of his parish church. He also gave details of the ceremonies that made up the liturgical year, which included bonfires, feasts, and processions.
