Liberal League. A political organization within the Liberal Party, founded in February 1902 with Lord
Rosebery as president and including H. H.
Asquith and Sir Edward
Grey among its vice-presidents. Membership included Liberal Imperialist MPs, a number of Fabians, Liberal landowners, imperialistically minded journalists, and nonconformist ministers. Its aims were vague but ‘moderate’. It succeeded in retaining within the Liberal Party some who considered leaving it over the party's cautious attitude to the Boer War. The league supported the ‘national efficiency’ campaign and a ‘step-by-step’ progression towards Irish Home Rule. It was well represented in the Liberal government of 1905 (though not by its president). Rosebery tried with little success to use the league to oppose that government's policies, including the 1909 budget, and it was dissolved in acrimony in May 1910.
