Keynes, John Maynard (1883–1946). Arguably the foremost economist of the 20th cent., Keynes was born in Cambridge and combined a successful academic career with that of civil servant and government adviser. His early work in economics evolved out of the
Marshall tradition in Cambridge, but through the 1920s and 1930s he increasingly broke new ground. His
Treatise on Money (1930) and
The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money (1936) heralded the Keynesian revolution, which regarded government control of spending as the key to providing full employment. But his influence stretched beyond macro-economic policy. He was critical of the 1919 treaty with Germany and a main architect of the international monetary system created at Bretton Woods in 1944. As a prolific writer in newspapers and popular journals, occasional broadcaster, and speaker, he had a major impact upon the cultural and intellectual life of his time.
