Montrose's victory at
Aberdeen in September 1644 was but a raid and he was soon on the move again, pursued by superior forces under
Argyll himself. When the covenanters retired for the winter, Montrose was persuaded to an insolent incursion into the heart of Campbell country around Inverary. On 2 February 1645, under the shadow of Ben Nevis, Argyll's forces were cut to pieces at Inverlochy, while their hapless chief watched from the safety of a galley on the loch. To the king, Montrose wrote jubilantly that he would soon lead his army south to the rescue.
