Fontenoy, battle of, 1745. In the War of the Austrian Succession, the French were besieging Tournai. The duke of Cumberland, in command of a large army, attacked a superior French force under Marshal Saxe on 11 May. After heavy fighting, the attack was repulsed, the Irish Jacobite brigade particularly distinguishing itself. The fall of Tournai soon after helped to persuade Prince Charles Edward Stuart to embark on his invasion of Britain.
