Ferrar, Robert (c.1504–55). Protestant martyr. Ferrar was born in Yorkshire, took holy orders, and soon adhered to the reforming party. He became chaplain to Cranmer and took a wife. Under the patronage of Somerset, he was appointed bishop of St Davids (1548). His chapter brought a series of complaints against him and after the fall of Somerset he was tried and imprisoned. When Mary succeeded in 1553 his fate was sealed. Ferrar was deprived of his see in March 1554 and burned in the market-place of Carmarthen in March 1555. He died with great courage.
