Declaratory Act

The Oxford Companion to British History | 2002 | | © The Oxford Companion to British History 2002, originally published by Oxford University Press 2002. (Hide copyright information) Copyright

Declaratory Act, 1766. This asserted parliamentary sovereignty against the claims of the American assemblies, although in other writings it was made clear that Parliament would not try to tax Americans. It was designed to win the consent of king, Lords, and Commons to the modification, or repeal, of the Stamp Act.
