Clogher, diocese of (diocese of Clochar mac nDaimine). The Irish see of Clogher in the province of
Armagh was established by the Council of Raithbressail (1111). At Kells-Mellifont (1152) its territory was increased, though for a spell (1135–92) the see was transferred to Louth until the Anglo-Normans settled there. There were usually Irish, not Anglo-Norman, bishops until the 16th cent. Since the Reformation there have been both catholic and Anglican bishops of Clogher, though the Anglican diocese was vacant (1571–1604), and for a spell (1850–86) united with the Armagh diocese. There are cathedrals at Clogher and Enniskillen.
Revd Dr William M. Marshall
