Claim of Right
Claim of Right, 1689. The Scottish equivalent of the English Bill of Rights, declaring that James VII had been deposed and that no Roman catholic could succeed to the throne of Scotland. But it also declared prelacy to be a great grievance and prepared the way for a presbyterian church settlement. On these terms the crown of Scotland was offered to William and Mary.
