Amboyna massacre, 1623. The island of Amboyna in the Moluccas became the focus of Anglo-Dutch rivalry in the spice trade. In 1623, the English settlement was wiped out by the Dutch, who were the dominant power in the region, and the English East India Company turned its attention towards the Indian subcontinent. The massacre soured relations between Dutch and English for many years.
