al-Baiḍāwī. ʿAbdallah b. ʿUmar al-Baiḍāwī, of Persian origin, author of one of the best known works of tafsīr (Qurʾān commentary). Al-Baiḍāwī belonged to the Shāfīʿī school of law, and wrote on law, grammar, and scholastic theology. He became chief qāḍi (judge) in Shirāz, and died in 1286 CE.
