Yehudai ben Naḥman

Yehudai ben Naḥman or Yehudai Gaon (8th cent.). Head of the Jewish academy of Sura. He was the first gaon to write a book, the Halakhot Pesukot, and the first to compile responsa. He rested his decisions entirely on the Babylonian Talmud, and through his influence the Babylonian rather than the Palestinian Talmud became the basis of halakhic decisions.
