Wŏnhyo (618–86). Korean Buddhist scholarmonk. Wŏnhyo founded the Punhwang (or Haedong) subsect of the Hwaŏm (
Hua-yen) sect, integrated various Buddhist thoughts through his notion of the
‘harmony of disputes’ (
hwajaeng), and popularized Buddhism through dance and song. A prolific writer, his works include
Kisillonso (‘Commentary on
Awakening Mahāyāna Faith’) which had a profound influence on Buddhists in E. Asian countries.
