Smārta Sūtra

Smārta Sūtra. Any Hindu sūtra based on smṛti, understood as traditional law. They include those concerned with family and household rituals (gṛhya) and the Dharma Sūtras. Smārtas are also those who compose such texts, and those brahmans who integrate devotional theism into dharma. The smārta movement was a syncretistic movement connected in origin with Śaṅkara, who recognized five deities in particular (Viṣṇu, Śiva, Pārvatī, Gaṇeśa, and Sūrya) as the guarantors of dharma and social order in harmony with the order of the cosmos.
