Six hundred and thirteen commandments. The laws found in the Jewish Pentateuch. There are 248 positive commandments and 365 negative ones. The first classification was made by Simeon Kayyara, and Maimonides later set them out in his Sefer ha-Mitzvot. They are known as Taryag Mitzvot, because taryag has the numerical value in Hebrew of 613. For the 614th, see HOLOCAUST.
