Shneʾur Zalman of Lyady (1745–1813). Founder of the Ḥabad Ḥasidism movement in Judaism. A student of Dov Baer, he was set to compose an up-to-date Shulḥān Arukh (publ. 1814). He became the Ḥasidic leader of Reisen in 1788. By 1801 he was settled in Lyady and known as the ‘Rav of Lyady’. His Likkutei Amarim (Collected Sayings) is the principal text of the movement. The work is also known as Tanya and is, unlike most Ḥasidic works, a systematic exposition. It is often referred to as the ‘written law of the Ḥabad’; and Shneʾur Zalman is known as Baʿal ha-Tanya.
