Qalandar. Eastern name for holy beggars, perhaps
derwishes. The name occurs in the
Thousand and One Nights, as though the Qalandars are a particular sect; but although they have been associated with the
Bektāshīy(y)a, it seems more probable that they were unorganized and simply took to begging as a way of life.
