Minhag

The Concise Oxford Dictionary of World Religions | 1997 | Copyright

Minhag (Heb., ‘custom’). Customs which have become binding on various Jewish communities. Minhag is an important ingredient of halakhah. Some have taken the force of commandment and have become part of the written law for the entire Jewish community, while others have only local force (e.g. ‘the custom in Jerusalem’, BBB 93b).
