Jon Frum ( John Broom?). A cargo cult in Vanuatu (formerly New Hebrides) which arose on Tanna Island in the late 1930s and has spread more widely and appeared intermittently ever since. A mysterious figure, Jon Frum (variously understood as an ancestor, the local mountain god, Karaperamun, or the ‘King of America’, after contact with affluent American troops in Second World War), was believed to be coming with a cataclysm that would sweep away the whites, unite Tanna and other islands, and introduce a world of plenty without need for farming or keeping pigs.
