Eihei-ji. The Zen monastery of Eternal Peace, founded by Dōgen Zenji in N. Japan, in 1243. With Sōji-ji, it is one of the two main monasteries of the Sōtō school. For its uneasy history with its companion monastery, see Sōji-ji. It is now a major meditation centre, with about 15,000 linked centres worldwide.
