pillar. 1. Free-standing unadorned
pila or
pier,
monolithic or built up, usually on a rectangular or square plan.
2. Incorrect term for a free-standing memorial column, such as
Railton's Nelson Column in Trafalgar Square, London (1840–3), and such usage should be avoided.
3. Pier, as in a
nave arcade in a church, although some commentators find such usage obsolete and confusing.
