nine altars. According to tradition there are Nine Choirs or Orders of Angels, mediating between God and Man, nine squaring the Trinity. This is reflected in the design of certain retrochoirs (e.g. Fountains Abbey, Yorks. (c.1205–47), and Durham Cathedral (1242–1280s) ).
