Shoosmith, Arthur Gordon
Shoosmith, Arthur Gordon (1888–1974). Russian-born English architect. He worked in India from 1920 to 1931, supervising the building of Lutyens's Viceroy's House in New Delhi, and designing several remarkable buildings, of which the finest is the Church of St Martin, the garrison-church west of Delhi (1928–30): it is a huge pile of brick, with battered walls and a mighty, battered tower, fortress-like and timeless, a truly Sublime building. He also designed the Lady Hardinge Serai, a rest-house for travellers and their animals (1930–1).
