Scott Brown, Denise (1931– ). Zambian-born American architect (née Lakofski). Educated in South Africa, London, and the USA, she worked with numerous architects, and married Robert
Venturi in 1967 with whom she had collaborated since 1965. As a partner of Venturi, Rauch, & Scott Brown from 1980, and principal in charge of urban planning and design, Venturi, Scott Brown, & Associates, since 1989, she made a considerable contribution to the success of the firm, and has had a distinguished academic career. She influenced Venturi's
Learning from Las Vegas (1972) in which the idea was promulgated that simple sheds with applied decorations and large signs were more appropriate exemplars for the time than
International Modernism.
