Roth, Alfred (1903–98). Swiss architect. He established his position within
International Modernism by collaborating with Le
Corbusier and
Jeanneret-Gris on two houses for the
Weissenhofsiedlung (1927), described in
Zwei Wohnhäuser von Le Corbusier und Pierre Jeanneret (Two Houses by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret—1927), and later published his reminiscences in
Begegnung mit Pionieren (Meeting with Pioneers—1973). He was a member of the Swiss
CIAM group, through which he obtained his celebrated commission for the Doldertal Apartment Block, Zürich (1935–6), designed with his cousin
Emil Roth (1893–1980) and Marcel
Breuer for
Giedion. From 1934 he edited the CIAM journal,
Weiterbauen, published
The New Architecture (1939), and edited
Werk from 1942 to 1956. He was influential in publicizing modern Swiss architecture and the International style.
