Quaroni, Ludovico

Quaroni, Ludovico (1911–87). Italian architect, teacher, and town-planner, he was a distinguished Neo-Classicist during the Fascist era. He designed a group of small villas, Gaeta Region, Latina (1936), and the Piazza della Nuova Stazione Urban Plan, Ostia Lido, near Rome (1937—with E. Fuselli). Other works included the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore (later San Franco), Francavilla al Mare (1948–58), a housing development, in which a Roman vernacular style was attempted, at the Tiburtino Quarter, Rome (1950—with C. Aymonino, Mario Ridolfi, and others), and La Martella Housing and Church, Matera (1951–2—with others). He published numerous works, including La Torre de Babele (The Tower of Babel—1967), Immagine di Roma (Image of Rome—1976), and La città fisica (The Physical City—1981).
