Price, Sir Uvedale (1747–1829). Author of
Essay on the Picturesque (1794) and important influence on the cult of the
Picturesque (which he defined as a separate aesthetic category, identifiable as distinct as
Burke's categories of the
Beautiful and the
Sublime). He, more than anybody, encouraged landscape-gardeners to study the works of celebrated landscape-painters for precedents. He, as well as R. Payne
Knight,
Nash, and
Repton, also influenced the development of ‘natural’ English landscape-design.
