Matcham, Frank

A Dictionary of Architecture and Landscape    Architecture | 2000 | Copyright

Matcham, Frank (1854–1920). Leading English theatre and music-hall architect of the late-Victorian and Edwardian periods. His designs are festive, opulent, often elephantine (even blowsy), with distorted Orders. His best-known works are the Grand Opera House, Belfast (1894–5), the London Coliseum (1902–5), the Buxton Opera House, Derbys. (1902–3), and the London Palladium (1909–10).
