Maekawa, Kunio or Mayekawa, Kunio (1905–86). Japanese architect. He worked for Le
Corbusier and
Raymond before setting up on his own in 1935. He brought
International Modernism to Japan, and was a pioneer there of
reinforced-concrete construction, prompted by the ideas of
Nervi. His work was strongly modelled, including Kyoto Cultural Hall (1958–60) and Tokyo Metropolitan Festival Hall (1958–61), and influenced later generations including
Tange. Other buildings include the City Museum, Fukuoka (1979), the Prefectural Museum, Miyagi (1980), and the Concert Hall, Kunitachi College (1983).
