Cagnola, Marchese Luigi

Cagnola, Marchese Luigi (1762–1833). Italian Neo-Classical architect, whose work influenced later generations of Italian architects. In Milan he built the Ionic Porta Ticinese (1801–14) and Arco del Sempione or della Pace (1806–38), the latter a beautifully proportioned and detailed triumphal arch based on Roman precedents. His own house, the Villa Cagnola at Inverigo (c.1813–33), is a severe Neo-Classical work with a low domed circular entrance-hall and ranges of Ionic columns outside. His Pantheon-like Church of San Lorenzo (known as La Rotonda) at Ghisalba (1822–33) is a pure example of the Antique form. Although he did not design the campanile at Ghisalba, he was responsible for the free-standing five-stage tower at Urgnano (1824–9) with caryatides supporting the domed top. See moosbrugger.
