The houses of medieval serfs and servants in Britain and Europe were called "kots" in the old Norse language, Toplin says. These one- and two-room dwellings, centered on a hearth, were built of indigenous stone or wood and capped with a bowed or high-pitched thatched roof, writes Tolpin, a cabinetmaker-turned-journalist. His book, which includes an in-depth history of cottage design, is one of several that have been published recently on the subject.
