Which is easier: Reducing NO subscript x from PRB or bituminous coal? Georgia Power's Plant Scherer learned the answer during a project that aimed to halve the NO subscript x emissions from three units, only one of which fires PRB coal. Test results confirmed that overfire air can reduce formation of the pollutant while keeping increases in CO and unburned carbon to a minimum. And a comparison of the test results at Scherer with those from another plant in the Southern Company fleet confirms that coal composition has a significant impact on NO subscript x emissions, and NO subscript x emissions from boilers burning PRB coal are independent of boiler size.

Converting from funnel flow to mass flow Many old coal-fired plants have bunkers and silos with a funnel-flow discharge pattern. Storing PRB coal in such bunkers, which were designed for larger and drier particles of bituminous coal, increases the potential for spontaneous combustion and explosions. Wisconsin Public Service learned this lesson the hard way at its J.P. Pulliam Station as it was testing a blend of bituminous and PRB coal in 1991.

Give your plant a dust control tune-up Because PRB coal is smaller, more friable, and contains more fine particulates than bituminous coal, controlling the fugitive dust generated as PRB coal moves from bunker to burner tip is problematic. The challenge for material-handling systems at power plants that have switched coals is to minimize this dust and capture it cost-effectively and without compromising safety.

Optimizing boiler design for PRB coal Low-sulfur coal from the Powder River Basin (PRB) deserves much of the credit for the dramatic improvements in US air quality over the past 30 years.
