Viseu

Viseu , town (1991 pop. 20,589), capital of Viseu dist. and Beira Alta, N central Portugal. The town has agricultural-processing and textile industries. It is famous for its wine. It was founded by the Romans, captured by the Moors (893), and retaken (1058) from the Moors by Ferdinand I of Castile. Noteworthy are a cathedral of mixed style, remains of ancient fortifications, and a museum.
