Karl August Varnhagen von Ense

Karl August Varnhagen von Ense , 1785-1858, German poet, historian, and journalist. He collaborated with Chamisso and other writers and wrote Biographische Denkmaler [biographical monuments] (5 vol., 1824-30). The Berlin salon of his wife, Rahel Antoine Friederike Levin Varnhagen von Ense (1771-1833), was frequented by leading romantics, among them Heine, Gutzkow, and Laube.
