Tete
The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition
Tete , town (1997 pop. 101,984), capital of Tete province, W central Mozambique, on the Zambezi River. It is a trade center; coal mines are at nearby Moatize. Founded by the Portuguese in 1531, Tete long served as headquarters for traders, slave-raiders, and gold prospectors.
