Sans Souci

The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition | Date: 2008

Sans Souci [Fr.,=without care], palace built (1745-47) at Potsdam, Germany, by Frederick II, who lived there for 40 years. Over 300 ft (91 m) long, it is believed to have been conceived by Frederick himself and executed by Knobelsdorff. The library and the magnificent park, the audience chamber with its fine paintings, the orangery, the statue of Frederick, and the great fountain are especially remarkable.
