Roscoe, Sir Henry Enfield

Sir Henry Enfield Roscoe (rŏs´kō), 1833–1915, English chemist. He was professor (1857–87) at Owens College, Manchester. He is known for his work, with R. W. Bunsen, in photochemistry and for his study and analysis of vanadium compounds and his isolation of the metal. He was knighted in 1884. He wrote two standard works, Lessons in Elementary Chemistry (1870) and, with Carl Schorlemmer, A Treatise on Chemistry (3 vol., 1878–95).
