New York University mainly in New York City; coeducational; chartered 1831, opened 1832 as the Univ. of the City of New York, renamed 1896. It comprises 13 schools and colleges, maintaining 4 main centers (including the Medical Center) in the city, as well as the Institute of Environmental Medicine at Sterling Forest, N.Y. Its research units also include the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, the Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, and the Institute of Finance. Its library's special holdings include the Tamiment Library of American Radical History and the Wagner Labor Archives. Among its other facilities in the city are Town Hall (a concert hall operated by the university since 1958) and a well-known fine arts center.
