Louis of Baden

Louis of Baden , 1655-1707, margrave of Baden (1677-1707), military commander in the service of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1689 he was made chief commander of the imperial army in Hungary, where he scored (1691) a resounding victory against the Ottomans at Slankamen. Shortly afterward he was sent to head the army of the Rhine in the War of the Grand Alliance (1688-97). He later fought in the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14), but gave up his commands after being forced to retreat; he died a few months later.
