Johor Baru

Johor Baru or Johor Baharu , city (1991 pop. 561,071), capital of Johor , Malaysia, S Malay Peninsula, opposite Singapore. The city is connected with Singapore by a stone causeway across the narrow Johore Strait. It is a trade center for rubber and tropical produce. The seat of the sultan of Johor is in Johor Baru; his residence, Bakit Serene, contains priceless art treasures. The population of the city is mainly Chinese.
