Jeonju

Jeonju or Chonju , city (1995 pop. 563,406), capital of North Jeolla (Cholla) prov., SW South Korea. It is a transportation, industrial, and agricultural center in the heart of the country's most densely populated and richest rice-growing area. Industries include food processing and the production of paper, plastics, batteries, and trucks and buses. The city was the capital of the Hu (or Later) Paekche dynasty (892-936). The founder of the Choson (Yi) dynasty, Korea's last imperial line, is buried in Jeonju.
